Nature is sometimes recommend ed as furnishing- an example to man of the proper method of dis pensing rewards and punishments. Nature is sure, prompt and inex- to eartb eveT evening, rises each orable. When her laws are violat- j succeedin da7 bright and early. with its constitution unimpaired and just as ready for business as ever. Even a plain, ordinary every day lie ha3 more unblush ing audacity than a " bronze statue," but for indfstructible vitality aud sublime assurance tho historical lie is the most mag nificent of all the family of false, hood. It is for thi3 reason that some of the New England school histories etlll teach as sacred truths Whittier's poetical lie about Barbara Fritchie and the absurd story that Jefferson Davis was arrayed in female attire when he was captured after the col lapse of the Confederacy. On the other hand, rewards are frequently of fered for good behavior diligence and the like, and the discipline maintained is better than it w&s under the old system. In the management of children at home the system of rewards for good behavior should not be made so obvious or specifrce as to lead the child to set more value on the re ward than upon approbation, hut rewards should be substituted as far as possible for punishments. Whether a child is kept from play with his associates a3 a pun ishment because he has neglected his lessons, or is rewarded with freedom and indulged iu -some desire because he has done well, ma)' amount to the same thing in the end, but it is better to give him the idea that he is being re warded for good conduct than to leadthim to the belief that some natural right is being taken from him as punishment for infractions of a rule of conduct to which he cannot see the justice.
